Her amazing futuristic designs initially caught our eye at Graduate Fashion Week, and now, we’ve caught up with Meera Sharma (below right) to find out more about her stylistic influences, and exactly what she believes it takes in order to become a successful Fashion Designer. Note pads at the ready!
What encouraged you to become a Fashion Designer?
I have always had an interest in fashion from a young age, whether it was designing dresses for my Barbie dolls or watching what people wore. I think it was a natural progression. To be able to let the world know my vision on fashion via my designs is exciting!!
Describe your own personal style?
I am certainly one of those people who believes that you should dress to express
your personality, so, my style varies according to how I feel. I would say my
style is quite effortless.
Do you have any style icons?
I love Nicole Richie’s sense of style, as she always looks great even when she’s going to the gym. I love how her style has transformed over the years, and how she has now found her style. I think Gwen Stefani is very chic too!
What’s your favourite style tip?
It’s more of a quote but can be used as a style tip: ”Dress everyday like you are going to get murdered in those clothes”.
What item of clothing couldn’t you live without?
My black, leather style jeans, – I am always wearing them!
Who are your favourite Fashion Designers?
I love Versace and Roberto Cavalli. I also find Alexander Wang to be very inspiring. I hope to follow in his footsteps.
What was your favourite show from LFW SS13?
I loved Ashish’s show, and Burberry. I actually blogged about my favourite LFW shows on love-for-fashion.
Now, we’re dying to find out more about your label. What are your design signatures?
Looking at my collection, it is certainly the layers, straps, and use of leather.
How would you describe your typical customer?
A young edgy woman, who likes to wear statement pieces that can be worn in a
variety of ways.
How would you describe your current range?
My debut collection (below) was based on the female superhero, who to me is powerful, sexy, and not afraid to stand up for what is right. I translated this into my designs via the layers, cut outs, and the fact that the straps allow for the garments to change shape.
What are your best sellers?
The cut out top, leather dress and trousers are proving popular.
So, bearing in mind your experiences, what advice would you give to others, who are currently trying to become Fashion Designers?
Make sure that you really do want to become a fashion designer, – it’s not an easy industry to get into, as it is quite over saturated. Everyone wants to be a designer or thinks that they are a designer, so, make sure you have a USP. I would recommend getting a degree in fashion design from a top University as well. Also you have to be passionate about fashion, as it is a long slog before you will get recognised, – it takes hard work, determination, and plenty of networking! Be ready to give up your social life, and engross yourself in the world of fashion!
And, one last thing, – what do you do when you’re not designing?!
I actually run my own blog and write for a variety of internet magazines, which means that I get to attend a lot of high profile events, and interview a number of celebrities. I am also learning to DJ at the moment, as I love music!
