UK designer Meera Sharma’s debut collection, Femme Fatale, features a combination of leather, plastic, sheer fabric and cutouts in black. According to Sharma, Femme Fatale was inspired by the female superhero: “the ultimate woman, a woman who is sexy, strong and powerful.” Lucky for you CK readers, we asked Meera Sharma about her collections and what advice she has for aspiring fashionistas and designers!

Samantha Shaw, CocoKouture: What inspired your first collection?
Meera Sharma: My first collection was inspired by the female superhero, who, to me, is the ultimate woman. She is powerful, sexy and not afraid to stand up for what is right. You can see these elements in my collection from the details on the garments as well as the layers to each look, which represents the double life that a superhero often lives.

CK: What advice do you have for aspiring designers?
MS: Do a lot of work experience to decide whether you really do want to be a fashion designer. Many people often decide to pursue a career in fashion as they think it is glamorous. You have to be willing to give your whole life to your career. There isn’t a lot of time for friends and family!

CK: How did you get your start in the fashion industry?
MS: Doing a degree in London helped, especially showing my collection at the graduate press show at my university. It got my collection noticed.

CK: Will you only be creating collections for women?
MS: At the moment I am concentrating on women’s wear, but expanding my brand to include menswear would be something I would consider in the future.

CK: Where do you see your brand in five years?
MS: I am a very ambitious person and would like to see my brand fully established. I would ideally like to have a fashion company with offices based in London, L.A. and NYC.

CK: Who is your favorite designer?
MS: Versace and Roberto Cavalli – can’t just pick one!

CK: What, in your opinion, constitutes a fashion don’t?
MS: Copying what others wear mindlessly. I feel fashion should be a way to express your personality, not someone else’s. In the words of Anna Dello Russo, “Fashion is a declaration of your own freedom!”

CK: What are some upcoming trends for us to look forward too?
MS: Layers, and loads of them: sheer fabrics, leather. I also love wearing menswear pieces as women’s wear and dungarees!
